Emporia State University, or ESU for short, is a state university located in Emporia, which is the county seat of Lyon County, in the US state of Kansas, having a population estimated at a number of more than 26 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Emporia is the principal city of the Emporia Micropolitan Statistical Area, which contains all of Lyon and Chase counties.
ESU was founded in March 1863, by the Kansas Legislature, first staring as Kansas State Normal School, which had a first graduating class of only 2 women. In February, 1923, Kansas State Normal School became Kansas State Teachers College, which was renamed Emporia Kansas State College, in July, 1974. In April, 1977, the institution adopted its current name, since then, continuously growing, having today a student enrollment approximated at a number of more than 6000, of which, over 4000 are undergraduates.
Emporia State University consists of 4 colleges - school of library and information management, the Teachers College, the business school and the college of liberal arts and sciences - through which it offers students quality educational programs, also offering the only instructional design and technology Master of Science degree in Kansas, IDT's Master of Science degree being offered entirely online.
ESU's athletic teams are known as the Emporia State Hornets, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, including in women's basketball, which is one of the university's most successful athletic program, and in which the Hornets have played in the NCAA Women's Division II Basketball Championship. In 2010, the Lady Hornets basketball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship, defeating the Fort Lewis College (Colorado) Skyhawks.
The distinctive colors of the Hornets are black and gold and their mascot is Corky the Hornet.
